random thoughts and impressions
ich habe soeben meine letzten Änderungen an meiner Masterarbeit abgeschlossen, irgendwie hatte die erste Arbeit 2003/2004 mehr Spass gemacht. Auf jeden Fall sollte ich jetzt wieder mehr Zeit haben 
I just finished the last changes on my recent Master thesis, somehow I enjoyed the first one back in 2003/2004 way more.
I used to be a long time KDE user, then switching over to openbox (I loved my 10 virtual desktops) when i was actively developing software. As I became more and more a regular user I moved from a application launching WM (openbox, KDE kicker, gnome applets, …) to GNOME. And I am happy with that for ~2years.
Today I installed openSUSE 11.2 (feels great, later possibly more), with KDE only first (trying to give KDE4 a shot) but soon I got all Gnome packages installed and rid of KDE.
Seems like Gnome is the desktop of my choice (and I am glad I can choose) for this decade.
S. and I keep discussing whether or not to donate to charitable organizations or not. Donations include money or simply time/labor as a volunteer. However, we are not finding closure on this topic.
When I was checking out Sundance for their night skiing passes, I somehow stumbled over the Sundance Film Festival site, which reminded me that I wanted to check out how/where/when to get tickets for that. This festival has produced a couple of good indie movies and I always wanted to see if I can make it there.
Cheap as I am, I was not willing to pay several hundreds of $$$ to get into it. So I ended up applying for the Volunteer program, mostly out of curiosity to be part of the behind-the-scene parts rather than to run into any VIP or get to see an actual movie. However, the program is not too bad, for every 4h worked you get 1 voucher for a screening session.
Yesterday, I got confirmation that I was accepted (surprise, surprise, who would reject free labor…) and I am going to be in the Theater Operations department (aka ticket guy … “Du kommst hier nisch rein!”;). Anyways, this will be new to me and as I always wanted to check out such types of jobs I am pretty excited, will keep you posted. The festival will take place late January twenty-ten.
wie vor ein paar Tagen bereits erwähnt, haben sich einige schon ihren Platz in der Ruhmeshalle gesichert.
Heute war dann wie Weihnachten, gleich 2 Neuzugänge an einem Tag.

im Kampf gegen Mr. Uebergewicht ist jedes Mittel recht. So hat mich S. im Laufe der letzten Monate zu einem halbweg stetigen Lauf-Anfänger gemacht. Heisst, wir gehen meist 2x pro Woche abends am Fluss laufen 2-3 Meilen und ab und an am Wochenende dann auch mal 5-6 Meilen laufen.
Das ganze gipfelte dann am vergangenen Samstag in meinem 1. 5000m Lauf, eine fund raising Veranstaltung von Lori’s Therapiehundeklub. Immerhin, 8. Platz in meiner Altersklasse… fürs erste zählt: durchgehalten und dabeigewesen
Für nächstes Jahr sind wir auch schon fürs WBR (24h/178mi)[1][2] angemeldet… mal schauen

Oh, schlimmer als Chris’ “Auf gehts Musikanten” von “Juwelen der Heimat” ist eigentlich nur das hier, was ich beim Hack klauen muss (braucht starke Nerven).
endlich komme ich mal dazu, an den Bildern zu arbeiten, die sich so in den letzten 6 Monaten angesammelt haben (siehe auch “Was für ein Sommer“). Um jetzt nicht in recht viel Geschichten auszuschweifen, geb ich hier nur eine kurze Synopsis:
I finally got to work on the pictures that have piled up during the last 6 months. In order to cut long stories short I will just give a brief summary instead of the full story:
Last week I got confirmation that the automation rock star will join QA, I am excited. This is the long due step towards improved automated testing.
Automation unfortunately is the one area that is being cut first when schedules or resources run tight. Paradox enough, automation however is the only investment that will help you when resources are running tight - nothing beats the wage of an idling server that just waits to run your repetitive tasks for cheap.
With the yet to be announced automation rock star, I am going to introduce a couple of changes:
a) a dedicated manager/architect/project manager to drive the effort
a) a dedicated automation test team
b) a joint approach to improve our existing automation infrastrucure
This will be my focus in remaining FY09 and first half of FY10. I hope to not overwhelm the rock star - I started to collect a couple of features on my flight back to the US and got 70 high level features in about 90 minutes… my head is still full of ideas. The coolest highlight is a public API that I plan to provide to our partners & our community! Stay tuned…
Right after OSW, CW & NGDC in SFO I took off for PEK to visit the team. Beijing had plenty of smog and it was quite hot. Working with the team was fun, I spent 4 days just listening & talking. Some time ago, the TVCC tower lit up and burnt down. The smell of burnt buildings is classic, unique and not healthy - one could smell cancer in the air…
It was interesting to see how the team developed. On my first visit 2 years ago there was no team at all and now we have a thriving (CHECK) team. Wei Chao does an excellent job in managing the team and I have officially decided that project “Team China” is in its last stage where my supervision is only barely needed. Good job, I am proud.
However, ironically, I came across an old org chart and again I realized that over the years we have lost quite some talented engineers. More important though, I realized that I have lost a couple of good work buddies, I was not so proud.
es fing an mit meinem Umzug nach Provo…
dann kamen Freunde aus Nürnberg zu Besuch und es wurde geheiratet…anschliessend ging es nach Las Vegas, Bryce und mit ihren Eltern nach Nürnberg…hier wurde nochmal geheiratetfeiert, mit viel mehr (von meinen) Freunden als beim ersten mal (DANKE nochmal an alle, war ne super Feier)…
dann ging es ans Reisen durch Europa mit ihren Eltern und wieder zurück nach Provo… S hat dann das Ragnar Relay gemeistert…5 Tage spaeter ging es zurueck nach Nuernberg… das war dann anstrengend, da ja mittlerweile 3 Monate mit meinen Freunden nachgeholt werden wollte (und dann war da noch sowas wie Arbeit:)…
zurueck zu Hause in Provo wurden dann 2 Projekte angegriffen…Projekt Gartenhuette verlief laenger als geplant (dafuer haben wir nun 10qm grandiosen Platz und koennen die alte Bruchbude endlich abreisen, a new project is born, yay) … zum Ausgleich haben wir uns zu einem Spontankauf bewegen lassen und sind unter die Segler gegangen (was natuerlich auch wieder neue Projekte nach sich zog und noch zieht)…Segeln in der Mitte des Utah Hochplateaus… in der Wüste… kein Kommentar dann…
dann ging es glaub ich auch schon auf zur OpenSource World, Cloud World und NGDC in San Francisco und nun endlich nach China…
Jetlag sei dank komme ich nun auch mal dazu mein Blog zu aktualisieren, 4 Monate ohne update führt das Ding eigentlich ad absurdum, aber dazu mehr im nächsten Blog
